On Friday 9th July 2021 14:00 CEST we will have one of our almost regular quasi-monthly ECOFUN meetings open to our friends, colleagues and collaborators. These meetings aim to provide a friendly, safe and relaxed space for early career researchers to present the research they are working on, to ask questions and to obtain useful feedback and support from our community.
We are delighted that Silvia Caldararu from the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena will present some results from her latest research.
The title of her talk will be:
Plant nutrient limitation under elevated atmospheric CO2: integrating models with manipulative experiments and long-term datasets
ABSTRACT: The effect of nutrient availability on plant growth and therefore on the terrestrial carbon sink under climate change and elevated CO2 remains one of the main uncertainties of the terrestrial carbon cycle. This is partially due to gaps in our understanding of how plants respond to nutrient limitation and partially to the difficulty of assessing nutrient limitation at large scales over long periods of time. here, I will show how we can use a land surface model, QUINCY, in conjunction with data from manipulative experiments to improve our understanding of plant processes. This model can then be used together with long term datasets to assess the spatial and temporal extent of nutrient limitation. I show how a process-based model can be used to support and explain such patterns and nutrient limitation through exploring aspects of the nutrient cycle that cannot easily be measured at large scales.
